Baltic Wharf Pre-Application Engagement

2013 Placemaking Awards - Highly Commended Find out more here

Client: Bloor Homes and TQ9 Partnership

This contemporary and eco-friendly scheme was delivered with remarkable community support resulting from a cohesive and collaborative pre-application engagement process. The clients appointed Place Studio to design and manage the engagement process, working closely with the architects (Stride Treglown).
The project received virtually no objections at planning application stage and was granted consent unusually quickly for a large scheme of almost 100 houses on a key site in the small town. The commitment of the community was key to the success of this process, with many locals giving their time and valuable local insights to shape a better outcome for the town.
Our approach to engagement enabled the community to inform the Architects approach to the design of the scheme. Pre-application community involvement is promoted strongly in the NPPF and the Localism Act. It is often thought to cause delay and cost a lot but this example offers best practice in terms of speed, cost-effectiveness, integration of engagement and design, and quality of outcome.
